Sarah knew she looked hot. The way the waiter gazed straight down her cleavage every time she bent forward when he was hovering over the table made that abundantly clear. Darrell though seemed not to notice, even though she had dressed this way for his benefit not a stranger’s. A minute later the waiter was back again.
“Is everything alright?”
She smiled up at him, deliberately leaning forward, gratified when his eyes widened once more. Sarah pouted. Darrell still didn’t notice the byplay, seemingly engrossed in his own thoughts, although he did answer the man.
“Yes . . . Fine thanks . . . We’re fine.”
Sarah watched the waiter walk away and could take it no longer.
“What’s wrong, sweetie? You’ve been distracted all evening.”
She thrust her chest out at him, knowing how much attention he normally gave her in that particular department. Nothing. No reaction.
“Darrell…”
Finally he stopped toying with the last small piece of his steak and looked at her.
“What’s wrong? You know you can tell me.”
“Nothing’s wrong. In fact everything’s fine,Sarah. Except . . .”
He dried up, unable to continue with what he had to say. She waited patiently as his inner struggle, evidenced by his facial movements, continued. Suddenly she had a horrible sense of foreboding.
He wants to break up with me!
Unwanted, the thought flashed across her face and she bit her lip to prevent herself making a scene. Her eyes filled with tears at the prospect, not something she was prepared to contemplate. Angrily she blinked them back, unwilling to cry, but unsure of what to say or do next.
Darrell suddenly became aware of the look on her face and he twitched and then reached out a hand and grasped hers.
